What is the Civil Partnership Certificate?

Civil partnerships were introduced for same-sex couples in 2005 when same-sex marriage became possible where you and your partner must sign a civil partnership document in front of two witnesses and a registrar. Registering a civil partnership will give your relationship legal recognition in UK.

Civil Partnership is a legal relationship that can be registered by two people who aren’t related to each other and are available to both same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples.

Who can Apply for the Civil Partnership Apostille?

Anyone can register a civil partnership apostille as long as all the following circumstances apply:
• You are both 16 or over.
• If you are 16 or 17, you will usually need a written consent from your parents or legal guardians.
• You have lived in the same area in England or Wales for at least seven days
• Neither of you is already either a civil partner, or married before
• Not close blood relatives

How to register?

Two steps are required to register:

1. Give notice of your intention to register a civil partnership to the local register office
2. Register your intention in any Register Office or at any venue that has been approved to register civil partnerships

How to get the Certificate Apostilled?

• The Apostille is applied only on the original document.
  
• No scan or copy is accepted – you need to post the original or drop it off at the office (by appointment)
