A Certificate of no Impediment (CNI) is a document that confirms that you are legally free to marry. It is issued only to British citizens by the local Council or General Register Office.
The Apostille for No Impediment Certificate verifies the validity and authenticity of UK documents signature or stamp and consists of a certificate attached and the UK Government’s embossed seal.
Also known as a clearance certificate is a legally necessary requirement for overseas marriage or civil partnership.

How long does it take for a certificate of no impediment to marriage?
Your intended marriage will be announced at the office by the registrar (Registry Office). After around 3 to 4 weeks, if there are no allegations, the certificate of no impediment will be provided. The cost is normally between £30 and £40 depending on the local Council’s internal fees.
Alternative options for Certificate of No Impediment
Some countries can accept a Statutory Declaration made by a UK solicitor or Notary instead of CNI. The declaration needs to mention that you are free to marry and authenticated accordingly.
How to get a CNI?
- Book a notice of marriage appointment at your local register office.
- Fill out an application form and provide the required documentation, such as your birth certificate, passport, and proof of address.
- Pay the application fee, which is currently £36.
The CNI will be issued within 4 weeks of your application being processed.
Here are the supporting documents you need to apply for a CNI:
- Your birth certificate
- Your passport
- Proof of address (such as a recent utility bill or bank statement)
- If you have been married before, you will need to provide a copy of your divorce or annulment decree absolute.
- If you are under 18, you will need to provide written consent from your parents or guardians.
